VISIT TO KASA RASA-3

Zero Waste is a philosophy that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. No trash is sent to landfills or incinerators.

To give a quick intro to the term “ZERO WASTE MANAGEMENT” , it meant managing & recycling garbage to ensure nothing is a waste (It’s “Zero waste”). There is an expression in Kannada which says “Kasadinda Rasa”, simply meaning “Treasure out of Trash”).

Vydehi School Of Excellence got an opportunities to visit some project sites implementing Zero Waste Management at KASA RASA -3 ,  Doddanekundi, Marathali, Bangalore. The idea behind this visit was to reach out to students and teachers to segregate and demonstrate our responsible waste management practices.

Teachers along with students from Grade 7 and 8 went to the site on 27th January, where we met Ms. Archana, who has dedicated her effort & time to waste management projects & to create environmental awareness. She shared her working experience with us and also made the students aware related to segregate and responsible waste management practices. She told that wastes from some area are collected at this site. First level sorting includes categories like plastic bottles, bottle caps, covers, inked papers, printed papers, computer papers, thick bond papers.  Garbage is sorted based on its type. Covers, bio degradable, solid liquid wastes and metal wastes. Plastic covers again could be wet or dry covers. All other wastes go to the bio processing unit of this site. Very well planned & managed site with 10 groups of employee working full time in a self-sustained environment. All employees here work in a well protected & safe manner with good quality gloves, face masks, etc provided. Separate storage units were available for rubber, metal, paper wastes. All these segregated wastes were then sold to different vendors dealing with different kinds of recyclable materials.

By the end of the visit, the children gained a better understanding of waste management and realized that things to be organized and sorted well, everywhere!! Why not when we dump garbage? We could actually segregate and dump it and decided never to use plastic. Even our students brought gifts for those workers and distributed to them as a token of love.
