The problem statement is the most important component of a study. After reading the problem statement, the reader should understand why you are doing this study and be convinced of its importance.
As a problem solver we started with an identification and classification of problem followed by problem solving techniques. Students of Vydehi School of Excellence moved one step ahead for learning the technique of defining a problem statement on July 28th 2017 under the guidance of Ms.Camilla and Ms.Utkarsha.
New session began with the quick recap of identification and classification of problem and steps to make a mind map when working to find the solution.
An inspirational video was shared with the students emphasising how the problem statement is a precise way of summarising a project.
Students learned that a problem statement should be
• Substantiated by facts/ data
• Written objectively using concise language
• Should include specific details(who, what, when, where)
• Focuses on a single, manageable issue and
• Avoids assigning solutions
An activity was conducted where students were asked to use above checklist to define a problem statement for any one issue related to water, energy, sanitation, air quality or waste and environment. Based on the students statement which were well reinforced by the faculty a definition of problem statement was defined as
“A problem statement is a clear concise description of the issue that need to be addressed by a problem solving team. It is used to center and focus the team at the beginning, keep the team on track during the effort, and is used to validate that the effort delivered an outcome that solves the problem.”
Well another exciting learning session ended with a handout on information related to defining a problem statement.
